Each November 11th, people across the UK wear the red poppy as a symbol of Remembrance Day, honouring those who sacrificed their lives in military service.

In John McCrae’s 1915 poem In Flanders Fields, began in 1921 the image of poppies by graves conveys resilience and remembrance.

“In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row”

Around £50 million is raised annually from the sale of the buttonholes, supporting welfare of the military and their families.

At 11 a.m on the 11th and the closest Sunday, two-minute silence is observed. In Oxford the city meets at St Giles Cross.
